Challenge Course Questions

Q. How many elements are there on the high ropes course?
A.   There are ten different elements plus Base Camp Odyssey which is the training camp for the high course. 

Q. How many low ropes elements are there?
A.   There are twelve different elements.  The Wall, Whale Watch, Zig Zag, Mohwak Walk, Triangle Tension Traverse, Log Skis, Knightro Crossing, Spider Web, TP Shuffle, Wild Woozey, Island Hopping and All Aboard

Q. How large is the high ropes course?
A.   The course is 350 feet long, 48 feet high, 40 feet wide and it was one of the first of its kind built in Florida .  

Q. How large can the groups be?
A.   The groups can range from 8 to 60 people, depending on which package the group is interested in doing, when they're interested in doing it, and staff availability.

Q. What types of programs can a group do?
A. There are five different packages that we offer: The Low Element Basic (2-3 hours on low elements), Low Element Comprehensive (3-8 hours hours on low elements), Odyssey Basic (one level of Odyssey, the high course), Odyssey Super Challenge (both levels of Odyssey) and the Full Day (1/2 day on low elements, ½ day on high elements for a total of 6-8 hours).

Q. What type of clothing is not allowed on the course?
A.   Halter tops, mid-drifts, bathing suit tops, and single strapped tops are not permitted on the course.  Also closed toe shoes must be worn while on the course. For a full list of proper and improper attire, there is a downloadable information sheet under downloadable forms.

Q. What should I bring when I come to the course?
A.   Participants should bring sunscreen, and a water bottle (water is provided).

Q. How can I register for the course?
A.   A Reservation Request Form is available online. This form is used by the staff to check availability, staff, etc to start the process of reserving time on the Challenge Course for your group.. Once you have filled out the form, bring it into the Recreation and Wellness Center main office room 204 or fax it to (407) 823-5446.

Q.  Who can register for the course?
A.   In order to register for the course, you must be a club or organization recognized by the Office of Student Involvement or affiliated with a UCF group. Also, all participants that use our course must be current UCF students (enrolled in courses at the time of the group's program).

Q. Can I come out with my friends to the course?
A. Yes, Open Climbs are a time designed for you and your friends (UCF students) to come out and traverse our course with no prior registration necessary.

Q. Can non-UCF students or professional groups come and use the course?
A. At this time the challenge course is open to both UCF students as well as faculty/staff, and the general public. To reserve the challenge course please refer to the main challenge course page and click Facility Reservation Request Form.

 

Lake Claire Questions

Q. What can I reserve at Lake Claire?
A. There are twopavilions, a sand volleyball court, and equipment rentals that are available through our reservation office.

Climbing Tower Questions

Q. How tall is the tower?
A. The tower is 41 feet tall.       

Q. What are the hours of operation?

Q. What is the dress code for the Tower area?
A. Athletic attire works best in our area. Personal harnesses by approved manufacturers and climbing shoes are permitted. Tennis shoes will work too. Also, there are no jeans aloud for climbing and some type of shoes must be worn at all times.

Q. Do you have to know how to climb to use the Tower?
A. Not at all. Our student employees are passionate about climbing and are there to help individuals just starting out. We welcome all levels at the Tower and have challenges for all climbing abilities.

Q. What is a belay class?
A.   A belay class is a two hour non-credit class that is held for students desiring to learn the technique and art of belaying. Classes will be offered Thursdays from 11:00-1:00 and Sunday from 12:00 - 2:00 pm. There is a limit of 8 participants per class. First come first serve.

Q. Can I belay my friends?
A. Yes, once you become belay certified by UCF. Without this certification, our policy is to have the staff belay students. Belay certifications can be obtained one of two ways: 1) Going through one of our classes and passing the written and skills portion of the instruction or 2) Testing out on the spot, if you have belay experience.

Q. Why can't we use our own belay devices?
A.  Personal hardware such as belay devices are not permitted because of the risk involved. The belay devices used at our tower are inspected on a consistent basis and logged for records. Shoes, chalk bags, and approved harnesses are permitted.

Q. Is there anything special I have to do prior to climbing?
A.   Come during our hours of operation. Before climbing, every climber must fill out a liability form that is current for one academic year. In addition, there is a sign-in sheet that all climbers must sign prior to climbing.

Q. What is bouldering?
A. Bouldering is a type of climbing that does not require harnessing up or tying in to a top-rope. The climbing industry standard for bouldering height is twelve feet high. Bouldering can be dangerous, especially if it is not practiced safely. Boulderers should use crash pads, have spotters, and should not climb too high.

Q. Does the Tower allow bouldering?
A. Yes, the Tower allows bouldering up to the marked 10 foot line. During regular hours, top-roping takes priority and bouldering is not permitted below a climber who is top-roping.

Q. Can you reserve the Tower?
A. Yes, it is possible to reserve the tower. Reservations for the tower happen during non-operational hours and have a fee structure assigned to them.

Q. How many routes are on the Tower?
A.  There are currently about 20 routes on the Tower, ranging from beginner to advanced levels.

Outdoor Trips Questions

Q. Where can I find out about upcoming trips?
A. All of the trips for 2008-2009 are posted here.

Q. Where do I sign up for trips?
A. In order to sign up for a trip, you must come to the administration office in the Recreation and Wellness Center. Trip sign-ups on a first come first serve basis.

Q. How much do the trips cost?
A. The trip cost will vary depending on the type of trip and how much Outdoor Adventure is able to subsidize.

Q. Do I have to be a UCF student?
A. You must be a UCF student in order to participate in our Outdoor Adventure trips. Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome!

Q. How do we get there?
A. In most cases, unless otherwise mentioned, UCF will provide transportation to and from the destination.

Q. Are the pre-trip meetings mandatory?
A. Yes, the pre-trips meetings are mandatory. Information necessary for the trip is given at these meetings.

Q. Where are the pre-trip meetings?
A. Most of the pre-trip meetings are held in the Recreation and Wellness Center Room 206. This room is on the top floor of the building.

Q. What if I can't go to the meeting?
A. If you cannot attend the meeting, you must call the OA Trips Lead in order to receive all the necessary information and schedule a time when you can come in and fill out the necessary paperwork.

Q. When do I have to pay for the trips?
A. Payment for all trips is due at the time you sign up for the trip.
