How do I reserve space for an event at the Recreation and Wellness Center locations?
. Contact the Event Planner at 407-823-2408.
. Include the name of the organization requesting, contact person, date and time, type of event, space requested, and the number of anticipated participants.
Where can I put my personal belongings while taking classes or working out?
. There are cubbies in both of the group exercise rooms for students/members to store personal belongings while taking classes. While on the weight floor and basketball courts, there are black lockers for temporary use (no locks are required). There are also daily use lockers in the locker rooms, but you will need to provide your own lock. You can purchase a locker in the locker room for the whole semester from the Membership Office.
The RWC is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Why is the RWC so cold/warm?
. The Recreation and Wellness Center HVAC system is an extremely intricate system many times more complicated than your home or car air conditioner. The system is controlled by many computers and does not work at the push of a button. Creating an artificial environment is difficult and at times the facility may be cooler or warmer in certain areas due to usage and outside weather. The current setup allows for little deviation from the 72 degree setting for all areas of the facility.
Why can't I wear jeans or cargo pants at the RWC?
. If a person wishes to workout (basketball, weight lift, run, etc.) we ask that you wear appropriate attire. If a person does not plan to workout (as previously defined) and occupies the facility as a spectator only (during IM Sports), normal clothing is acceptable. Almost all of the machines on the weight floor are upholstered. With the usage these machines endure, we restrict all clothing that may harm the machine coverings (i.e., jeans, cargo pants, pants with rivets). This policy is posted within this webpage ( Policies ) and also physically resides in the facility on the main floor at the bottom of the stairs. We enforce this policy to the fullest extent to prevent needless damage to the machines.
Why do you leave the lights and televisions on all night?
. Due to the broad hours of operation and a facility usage of about 3,500 people a day we require a full time custodial and maintenance staff. Generally speaking during a normal week we have about six hours to get the facility clean for the next day. We leave the lights on in the facility for the custodial staff to complete their job. We do conserve power by turning off the lights in many areas such as the Administration Offices, Wellness Center, and group exercise rooms. The televisions are generally left on because we do not have power switches for them. Their power is supplied directly from circuit breakers in a room that is not readily accessible. Additionally, we have made the televisions "tamper proof" so no one can change the channel or turn them off.
Why can't I watch the X channel?
. Currently we have twelve televisions in the cardio area where we show six channels of various programming. Generally we like to show at least one news station (CNN, MSNBC, FOX NEWS), one music station (MTV, CMT, VH1, BET), one sports station (ESPN, ESPN 2) and one network station (ABC, CBS, NBC, Sunshine, USA). You will see at least one genre of these channels on our televisions. You may also use any of the twelve cardio machines with standard cable (channels 2 - 78) during your workout and watch whatever you want! The big screen TV on the weight floor will usually broadcast ESPN. We broadcast UCF sports games and play the sound over the house PA system. We also broadcast major sports games (Super Bowl, World Series, World Cup) with the house sound set to music.
Why don't you play country or more rock or rap, etc.?
. Currently the music in the facility is provided by Bright House Networks. The music was set on MTV2 and was played on the large screen over looking the main weight floor. We received many complaints about the commercials within the MTV2 broadcast. The decision was made to switch over to a digital music station which provided commercial free programming. Currently the stations are genre based just like normal radio stations. Although we do change the channels regularly, we are always looking for solutions to better satisfy a broader range of users. |
